Emily Francois
Do you know what it’s like to drown?
The water rapes your lungs, forcing its way in, burning you.
Your eyes scream from the constant changing of blue to black.
Your legs are dead weight, useless to save you.
And fear pulls you down to the bottom, though you’re still at the top.
Do you know what it’s like to drown?
Piles of bills on the table call your name, daring you to look.
Children crying, asking why they can’t have the new clothes they desperately need.
A spouse leaving, because they can’t live this way.
And anxiety choking you until there’s no room to breathe.
